Forget all those cookie-cutter style, internet-story rip 'n read radio jocks. This guy is the real thing. A fierce adherent to the 'old school' philosophy of formatics and original show prep but also confident, intelligent, quick-witted and experienced enough to able to shoot from the hip...and make it work.
According to Daryl, the secret to success in radio is continual reinvention and consistently creating original ideas. "Plus," Daryl adds, "it helps if you have my legendary, unrelenting impish wit...and my remarkable humility". And that's what makes people listen to him. Daryl doesn't see himself as a DJ. He's a radio entertainer.
People also seem to be drawn to the honesty of his character and the fact that he clearly loves what he does, and also because he believes in the value of encouraging and developing the talents of others.
Below is a sample of clips from some of his radio shows. Very little of it is scripted, of that which is, all copy is by Daryl.

Whilst in the UK a while ago, Daryl popped in to visit a local radio station, Reading 107fm. They had been to his website and asked if he would do a guest show. He was given a quick tour of the studio and the desk and then given a set of headphones...

Daryl's sense of timing is legendary...which makes his talking to vocals sound so effortless. Apparently it is.

Contestants love coming on his show "...'cos he's so naughty..." Here, two girls who are best friends are quizzed to find out how well they know each other. They innocently get a little suggestive...and Daryl has fun...

The copywriters at Talk Radio 702 were given the task of writing a series of promos for Daryl's show drawing on what they perceived was the show's most distinguishable characteristic. They were clearly fascinated by the fact that there always seemed to be a twist to everything Daryl did...

So you think the All Blacks look so scary when they're doing the Hakka? You'd laugh if you knew what it really means. Daryl plays an English rugby commentator and takes us through it...

Again, sense of timing helps make this work. That, and his ingenious use of background music. Other ways of telling someone his fly is open...

An interesting story attached to this: Whilst at East Coast Radio, Daryl discovered there was another East Coast Radio...in Ireland. Here he pretends to phone the other East Coast Radio and chat to the on-air presenter Aaron O'Connell. Little do people know that Daryl is Aaron O'Connell (an excuse to use his shocking Irish accent) in a clever example of reverse scripting - Daryl recorded 'Aaron's' reactions first and then his own questions. This is a sample of the full clip.

"Hey, wait a minute, isn't that..." Although he's quite happy being himself, Daryl really doesn't mind being someone else. Here he shows his versatility with his voice through characterization and accent. Believe it or not, all voices and copy by Daryl.

Daryl's British style of humour often pops up in his use of double entendre. This clip earned him a serious finger wagging from the Programme Manager, who clearly didn't get it. "A tit is a type of bird, silly..."

The Traffic Guy (Johann von Bargen) was the longest serving member of Daryl's Breakfast Bunch and the unfortunate victim of many of Daryl's set-ups. Here the Traffic Guy tries to explain sport score allocation to Daryl (with calculator). Daryl is playing along because he has a link in mind, which the Traffic Guy messes up in the nicest possible way...

Following the Pope's refusal to endorse the use of condoms, and instead to encourage abstinence, Daryl tackles the issue through satire...after all, what do the leaders of the Catholic Church know about sex? And do they really know what a condom is? All copy and voices by Daryl, except the last character - a rare guest appearance by news anchor Uveka Rangappa.

Remember Shaggy's big hit 'It Wasn't Me'? Daryl recreates it in Shakespearean rap. Yes there is such a thing as Shakespearean rap. Daryl is still waiting for it to become a recognised category in the Brit Awards. All copy by Daryl; guest appearance by his producer Naveen Singh. Don't miss the end...

One of Daryl's many fake ads and the closest he got to being sued...by pizza giant Debonairs. His creation of Indian fast food character Devon Nair and his mythical Comrades Marathon special had unexpected results: people flocked to Debonairs to ask about their Comrades Marathon special. Debonairs weren't happy.

The solution's quite obvious: you can't get into trouble for saying the 'F***' word if you can't say the letter 'f'. Daryl and Navs try out a De-effer, a machine that automatically removes the letter 'f' at the beginning of a word. Great in principal...but sometimes you need that letter 'f'. Perhaps it just needs a little adjusting...

The De-effer is now correctly tuned. Or is it? There's only one way to find out....

In the spirit of the old hit TV comedy series "Not the Nine O'Clock News", Daryl presented "In Other News", a daily insert of stories designed to make your skin crawl - they were just so darn punny. Notice the deliberate exaggerated inflection, so typical of over-dramatised news reporting al la CNN. All copy by Daryl
